Webber Tapes Ltd has been producing audio test products and media since mid 1975 when it was set up by Peter Duncan, then chief technical engineer at The Music Center, Wembley, London.
As one of the UK's premier recording and film sound facilities, The Music Center had a constant drive for perfection and this prompted Duncan to develop a range of analogue test tapes for stereo and multitrack tape machines. These became the bedrock of Webber's products when the company was bought in 1979 by its current owner and chief engineer, Peter Self.
Self had a background of studio ownership and equipment design and had previously owned and run an independent record label with its own studio and location recording facilities as well as having been involved in equipment evaluation, test tape development and production testing.
The existing range of analogue test tapes was quickly followed by vinyl test discs, test cassettes and test hardware and latterly, digital test media. When CD technology first arrived Webber introduced CD-DA alignment discs and became involved with StageTech Developments (Sweden) and Abbey Road Studios (then EMI Abbey Road) in the development of a standalone CD Tester, the EC2, which had a bias to audio CDs.
Webber moved toward software development and test products during the early 90's and was the first company to offer a software tool for discerning audio quality on a comparative basis. Other software tools followed and its most recent activity is, in association with Andrew Ball - OpticalDisc, the development of a content and copyright enforcement tool, TraQ-iT.
